THE SMALL PARADISE OF YELAPA

Just 25 or 30 minutes south of downtown Puerto Vallarta you’ll find the quite beach of Yelapa; while far from being extensive, it’s a enchantment and appeal lay precisely in how small it is. Within its private, intimate ambiance one can truly breathe and relax.

The actual village of Yelapa has very few inhabitants. The lifestyle is simple, humble and casual and the people are relaxed and friendly. The only way to get there is by boat or water taxi, and this can be achieved in various ways- by contacting a local travel agency who can arrange a tour, going to the Playa de Los Muertos pier in Puerto Vallarta and asking about hours and availability, or taking a car or bus to Mismaloya or Boca de Tomatlán and hopping on a boat or water taxi from there.

One large benefit of this paradise is that it is nestled amidst the regions lush greenery and fauna, making it a place where constant contact with nature is possible; this makes it an even more fun and exciting experience. Yelapa’s various small hotels and palapas offer hospitality and impeccable service at affordable prices for all budgets.

As for the cuisine, there are options for all tastes; from breakfast, lunches enjoyed on the ocean’s edge and fresh seafood to drinks and gourmet candlelight dinners. The famous (and acclaimed) pies are a delight and a tradition, with flavors like coconut, chocolate, sweet cheese, lime, pecan and banana. You’ll find them with the lady who makes and sells them. I never found out her name but everyone knows her as “la Señora de los Pays” or the Pie Lady. She goes from restaurant to restaurant or even just along the beach offering these must-try snacks. I recommend looking for her in the mornings as the pies run out fast…..my favorite flavor? -The cheese pie. You also can’t leave without trying the raicilla, a traditional regional liquor made from agave.

Among the water activities for all ages found in Yelapa are kayaking, parasailing, snorkeling and diving. For those who prefer the land, you can take tours of the jungle and hillsides; one of the main attractions is the waterfall, which can be visited on foot or by horseback.

Whether you go with family, your partner or friends ... Yelapa is an outstanding destination that has something special for everyone!
